CD REVIEW: JESSE MALIN “ON YOUR SLEEVE”

Jesse Malin, former leader of D-Generation, joins the ranks of writers-blocked rockers who are putting out covers albums (there’s been an awful lot of them over the past couple of years). Jesse tips his hat to the writers that shaped his unique musical identity and appeal.

"On Your Sleeve" was recorded over seven days and features Malin’s interpretations of songs by such legends as Tom Waits, Neil Young, and Lou Reed, as well as contemporaries such as The Hold Steady and The Kills.

As a performing songwriter, Jesse appreciated the challenge of covering unique melodies not of his own design. Malin's solo career includes three critically-acclaimed albums, with the most recent, "Glitter In The Gutter," featuring talented guest performers including Ryan Adams and Bruce Springsteen.

Malin gives these songs his own touch, without distorting them beyond recognition. There are no noteworthy rearrangements, but it's a fun CD that does not aspire to be something it isn't. Not really necessary, as most fans would have preferred original material, but if you like Jesse's work, you should enjoy this CD.
