When a CD collection as large as mine comes up in conversation, one silly question that almost everyone asks is, “do you listen to all of them?”
Well obviously not all at once.
I was asked the question recently, and I found myself wondering how do make sure each CD has a fair chance of making it into the CD player?
I decided to pick a handful of discs at random each week (or so), in an effort to make sure I get to some of the titles I may not otherwise pick up. And at the end of the week, I would post about what I have been listening to. Hence the title.
So here's what I'm listening to...
THE ZOMBIES
LIVE AT THE BLOOMSBURY THEATRE, LONDON
Unfortunately, the Zombies had disbanded by the 1968 release
of what would be their signature album, Odessey and Oracle. Four decades later,
founding members Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent revisit that album's "This
Will Be Our Year," "A Rose for Emily," and "Time of the
Season."
This 25-song live set is worth the listen, although the presence
of songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Chris White is missed.
Blunstone’s voice sounds
almost as good as it did 40 years ago, and gives a glimpse into what might have
been.
KATIE MELUA-PICTURES
Katie Melua is a star in Britain, but somehow fame escapes her on this side of the pond. With a few albums in her back pocket, Melua shows more confidence on her fourth release, creating an album that is equal parts pop, folk and blues.
Never heard of Katie, but always liked the Zombies. I probably have far less recorded music than you do and there are still albums I probably haven't listened to in years and many that I've probably only listened to once or twice. I don't listen to music all the time like I used to and even if I were I figure it would take me a couple years at least if I listened to an average of 3 or 4 albums per day.

I probably do average 3 or 4 a day, but there are a lot of albums that I return to, which of course gets in the way of getting to the ones that collect dust.
DeleteDon't you have music going while you're writing, or do you need the quiet?
During the day I usually have talk radio on, which is very distracting. For a while I was listening to my remaining vinyl. I've gone through all of them since I started last September so I probably should start back through those when my wife's not home in the daytime.
ReplyDeleteFrequently I do have CD's playing at night at my desk. I have a tendency to listen to the same ones repeatedly--usually classical music. I can't say how many times I've played the Stan Getz "Cool Velvet/Voices" CD. Sometimes it just stays on my player and I'll just click replay when it finishes. Perfect background music for writing.

I think that's the challenge of any collection-you always have more than the titles that REALLY resonate with you.
DeleteI think McCarthy is the exception to that rule...he seems to discard the items that he absolutely cannot live without.
I think his whole music collection is his desert island list!
I've alctually kept some titles I do not like just because it's worth more to leave it on the shelf than to get $2 in trade credit.
