IN THE VAULT 05/04/2015

I have posted quite a few times about how much I like Todd Snider's debut album, Songs For The Daily Planet.

Here.

And here.

And again, here.

And in a Battle of the Bands post here.

I don't know that there is much else I can say.

Check the songs out.

If you can enter the Vault, check out the whole album!

  1. Oooh, finally one that's in my own vault. Big Todd Snider fan, especially of this album. This guy is so damn clever.

    1. TO ALL: Sorry I am so late responding-was away for concerts the last two weekends and have been playing catchup.

Snider is great live-funnier than most standup comics.

  2. Yes, you have posted a few times about this artist, as has McCarthy. He's fine. Not world-changing for me, but perfectly fine to listen to. Maybe if I listened more like I used to listen to albums to where they burned themselves into my psyche then maybe I'd be more fanatic. Sadly I just don't listen to music in the same way that I used to.

I like "Alright Guy". I've never been in jail with a bunch of hicks, but I did sit in a little room by myself one time while the cops processed my paperwork.

  3. Soon I'm going to send you an email to determine what I'd doing wrong with the vault. I know that this must be operator error, but I'm so non-tech savvy... well, it's not working. And I know it's ME.

    1. We can talk offline-it should not be too much trouble to get you going.

  4. Probably the best debut album of all time. Really, the only competitors are Rickie Lee Jones, David & David (which was their first and last) and, for me, 'God Bless Tiny Tim'.

Sure, some would argue for 'The Doors'. I can see that, but not for me.

And if we can eliminate the first album that was released without his approval, then Van Morrison's 'Astral Weeks' certainly has to be in the running.

It's too bad Warren Zevon made that unfortunate (and largely forgotten) first misstep, because otherwise, his self-titled album would absolutely have to be considered.

    1. I did not know that those Van songs (wasn't that the Bang masters) were without his approval.

I forget if you put Zevon in your list way back when-I know we were on the fence on how to handle it.

The Doors was a good one but I do not know that it's as solid as RLJ, TS, VM or WZ, mainly because of the self-indulgent "The End."

Hard for me to be objective with GBTT, but do you really think it so solid an album you'd put it on a top ten list? There's not one song on it you'd hit the fast forward button on (my acid test)?

  5. I'll be better on my commenting, as my run of concert trips has ended (two trips to the east coast in two weeks and boy are my arms tired).

Yeah, 'Bang Masters' was released without his approval - or even his knowledge (if I remember correctly). Those songs were all cut as singles (or just studio jams that he had no intention of releasing). So, to me, that album doesn't count as there was no artist control or even consent.

That means 'Astral Weeks' is really Van Morrison's first "official" album. (Incidentally, I like most of the songs on 'Bang Masters' regardless.)

I did mention the Zevon album but did not include it on my list because there was no way of getting around the fact that "Warren Zevon" was not really his first album.

Regarding 'God Bless Tiny Tim', yes, for me it really IS Top Ten. In fact, our Blogfest was titled 'SUPER 8 GREAT DEBUT ALBUMS', and I included it in my Top Eight.

No, I skip past songs on 'GBTT'. I usually skip 'The Viper' and 'I Got You, Babe', and sometimes even his most famous song, 'Tip-Toe Thru The Tulips'. But, see, that's YOUR "acid test" and not mine.

I like the other songs so much that skipping 2 or 3 songs on an album of 15 tracks does not bump it off my Top 8 list.

    2. Only Sometimes "Tip-Toe?"

I knew you liked the album-but did not realize how much.

I forgot it made your list back when we did that blog hop.
