Rolling Stone "discounted" the debut if the artist went on to greater success, and gave extra recognition to debuts where the success was never repeated. They skipped debuts from artists who had left well-known bands.
This explains why Greetings From Asbury Park did not make the top 25, but does not explain why Boston is not in the top ten.
As is the case with most Rolling Stone lists, it suffers from a bit of pandering and political correctness. So while their guidelines were not a bad idea, some of their choices (and the running order) are, in my opinion, missteps.
Here are the second 25 titles in their top 100 debuts...
26. Run DMC (S/T)
28. The B-52’s
29. Wu-Tang Clan “Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chanmbers)”
30. Arctic Monkeys (S/T)
31. Portishead “Dummy”
33. The Killers “Hot Fuss”
38. The Police “Outlandos D’amour”
39. Lynyrd Skynyrd “Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd”
40. Television “Marquee Moon”
42. Oasis “Definitely Maybe”
43. Jeff Buckley “Grace”
44. Black Sabbath (S/T)
45. The Jesus And Mary Chain “Psychocandy”
46. Pearl Jam “Ten”
47. Pink Floyd “Piper At The Gates Of Dawn”
48. Modern Lovers (S/T)
49. Franz Ferdinand (S/T)
50. X “Los Angeles”
My biggest problem with this portion of their list is that I'd have had Van Halen and Boston a lot higher.
As much as I like The Doors, I am not sure they'd be on the list (although if Franz Ferdinand makes the list, shouldn't every band?)
BOSTON-MORE THAN A FEELING
VAN HALEN-JAMIE'S CRYIN'
THE KILLERS-MR. BRIGHTSIDE
THE DOORS-LIGHT MY FIRE
WEEZER-BUDDY HOLLY
LYNYRD SKYNYRD-SIMPLE MAN
THE POLICE-ROXANNE
PEARL JAM-JEREMY
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN-GROWIN' UP
DR. DISCDUDE ~
ReplyDeleteYou don't think 'The Doors' should make the list? On a list of TOP 100?! Oh, to me, that's a no-brainer. It included AM and FM hits and it was a very revolutionary album that paved the way for The Doors becoming one of the country's hottest bands and most exciting live acts.
Granted 'The Doors' didn't make my Top 10 or 15 list (I forget now what number we selected when we did our Debut Albums Blogfest), but there's no question it would be on my list if the number was 100... or even 50. Probably even Top 30, despite the fact that I'm nowhere near as big a Doors fan as I was in my teens and twenties.

'Loyal American Underground'
Now that I read your comment, I may have been focusing on the top ten when I typed the statement.
ReplyDeleteThe album was one of my runners-up in our blogfest (I just checked) and I think I listed a good fifteen or twenty runners-up.
Good catch and I withdraw the statement.
However, I stand behind Franz Ferdinand being a case of sucking up to America's youth.

I don't know if this is a good or bad thing... but I have no idea who Franz Ferdinand is!
ReplyDeleteI guess it is neither good nor bad....but I needed a blog topic.
DeleteSee my response to Stephen below for who Franz is and was.

ReplyDeleteI would guess so, since I've never even heard of that person before.

'Loyal American Underground'
Apparently, since it is a Scottish indie rock band, not a person.
DeleteHe WAS a person, as I am sure you know...the former archduke of Austria whose assassination was one of the triggers of WWI.
Definitely agree that Boston should be higher. That's a classic and one of the greatest debuts ever. I need to go see what they placed higher.
ReplyDeleteAlex-
DeleteAgreed-it's a classic.
My earlier post has their top 25, and my next two posts will finish their list of 100.
I find navigating their lists on the RS site to be annoying-it takes too long for the screen to refresh (it's not just a list, you go through one album at a time).

I think the Doors does belong. They're rock history. History in more ways than one.

DeleteWho axed ya?
I kid-as you can see from my comments to Stephen, I've reconsidered, especially since I thought enough about that album to have it as a runner-up when we did this exercise.
