DAVID & DAVID-50% OFF

I know Stephen T. McCarthy has posted about his affinity for the David And David Boomtown album, and I did look for the post to link to it, but failed at finding it.

Although, as half of this duo, this album is where David Baerwald first came to prominence.

The album went platinum, spawned a top 40 hit and stayed on the Billboard albums chart for a year, and yet, no one has heard of them, or Baerwald.

Perhaps you don't know him better as being the co-founder (with Bill Bottrell, who you also don't know) of the Tuesday Night Music Club that launched Sheryl Crow's career.

Her you know!

Anyway, in between Boomtown and TNMC, Baerwald released a few fine albums on his own, and I'm betting you never heard of them, either.

Until now.

If you know the combination, the rest is in the Vault...

  1. Sheryl Crow - yes, her I know! Her I do not like.

David Baerwald - he I did not know, but he I very much like. What a great sound. This is absolutely being added to my own collection.

    1. Wow-don't like Ms. Crow at all? I do like her stuff, but boy was that debut album played to death...if I hear "All I Wanna Do Is Have Some Fun" it sends me into a violent rage to this day...

I did not know of the Baerwald connection to Sheryl Crow until after I had her album, and I'd not heard of David & David until meeting Stephen T, but a coworker had recommended Baerwald's solo stuff....great stuff, but sadly never got the attention it deserved.

How surprised i was that the D&D albums had the success it did but I only heard of it twenty years after the fact...

Man, it's like you're reading my mind or something.

First time (to my knowledge) you've ever posted about Baerwald and 'DAVID & DAVID'. And guess who is going to be a contestant in my "Battle Of The Bands" competition in just 3 days from now.

Yep. Got the 'Davids' going up against the 'Red Hot Chili Peppers' in a unique BOTB installment. Should be a close Battle.

You been reading my mind or reading my mail?

I know you did a post on "Boomtown" but for the life of me I could not find it....was going to link to it.

    2. No problem. I think it was part of a BIGGER topic. Not specifically about them.

      I'm with Bryan on that.
I do not like Sheryl Crow either. At all.

And that song 'All I Wanna Do' - ugh! Hate it! Always hated it, but I kept hearing it over and over and over and over and...

  3. Cool sound, though I've never heard of him. So much music, so little time to listen :)

  4. Never heard of any of these. And I was playing close attention to music releases back when D & D came out. Maybe they just didn't get much coverage where I was.

I've been amazed at some of the great music from the 70's that I somehow missed from groups who put out a lot of albums and then I've discovered them recently. Same with the 80's though I think there was so much more released during that decade.

    1. D&D came out early enough that I may have just missed it, but I still listened to radio in those days, so I think that it just did not get a lot of play in Philly.

My mantra has always been that there is a lot of good music out there if you look. But an album with a hit single? You shouldn't have to look for that!

    2. Yeah, but if you don't keep up with the singles charts or pop hit radio like I was back then--and most of my life for that matter--you can miss the hits. Having missed the hit I wasn't looking for any albums by D & D. I did however manage to accumulate most of Depeche Mode's catalog on cassettes back at that time.

    3. I wonder if they were simply bigger in the West-LA is big enough of a market to spawn a hit by itself, and maybe it just did not catch on in the east.

You make what is probably a valid point there. However, in reading so many comments at YouTube video uploads, it seems people all over the country - East, North, South, too - became big D&D fans back in '86/'87.

So, I don't think it was a geographic thing (like, mostly in the West), but may have been more of a state-by-state or radio station-by-radio station thang.

It is odd how so many people absolutely LOVED D&D, while so many others never heard of them.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a couple of my voters knew of them and love them. One, Anne O'Leary, a drummer, has even performed (and sung) 'Welcome To The Boomtown' in her band... and she was born and raised in Ireland! (Not sure where she was when she first encountered that D&D song.)

    5. Maybe they just didn't get airplay in my market, or maybe I just missed them. The Billboard position certainly proves out that they were popular.

Baerwald was not a household name in Philly-I heard of the solo stuff through one friend-he didn't mention the D&D album-and I forget when I made the connection to Crow's debut (do not think it was immediately)

Oh well...in any case, Lee and I missed them back in the day.
