John Fullbright's debut album was nominated for a Grammy, which does not always mean the record is any good.
I picked up the follow-up, Songs, based on an online acquaintance's recommendation, and I am glad I did.
Fullbright's style would best be described as folk/Americana, but the song writing is what makes this record compelling. The production is low key, almost sparse, which is usually the best test of a good song-if it's good without a lot of studio wizardry, it's good.
These are great.
There were no album clips that I could find, so I'm posting a couple of live clips, although the album has enough production value to outshine these audience recordings.
Fullbright is someone to keep an eye on...
More evidence that I don't keep up with music these days. I've never heard of this guy. He sounds okay, but these songs don't seem to break any new ground. Guess I'd need to hear his albums to make a better assessment.

Tossing It Out
Back in 1974 or so, Todd Rundgren said in an interview, "Every song that ever will be written already has been," (or something to that effect), and there is a lot of truth in that, especially when it applies to popular music.
DeleteI wonder when the last time we can honestly say that someone broke new ground?
That said, even though he does not seem to strike a chord with you, I really like the songwriting on the disc. I wish I'd been able to find better sample clips.
