IN THE VAULT 03/30/2015

From bubblegum to jazz...my collection goes all over the map (although before Stephen T. McCarthy's influence I think I only owned four jazz titles that were not releases by my uncles).

Not that my jazz selection is massive, but it has certainly grown.

I was familiar with Jeff Golub's work through a couple of his blues releases, and came across this title shortly after he passed away on New Year's Day.

You may even recognize this song, since it's a cover of a popular seventies tune...

McCarthy did a post a little while back that highlighted the different genres of jazz for people whose knee-jerk response is "I don't like jazz."

I used to be one of those people-while my uncles were pretty highly respected in jazz circles, I did not care much for their music (at least the titles I owned).

However, Golub's funky style works for me.

R.I.P. Jeff!

  1. I'm not a traditional fan of jazz (the exact person aimed at Stephen's previous post) but I like certain flavors. And I have to say, I do like this flavor. It's smooth, but colorful and lively enough that it's more than just background/elevator muzak.

    1. I have the same problem, Bryan-a lot of jazz is just boring to me-this is funky enough to keep me interested.

  2. Hey, LC, did you get the E I sent yesterday?

Hmmm... I definitely like Funk/Jazz, and I would think Golub's version of 'PICK UP THE PIECES' is stellar... if I wasn't already so familiar with the original.

This is "nice", and of course I dig the periodic electric organ washes, but the original is just so brimming with energy that this seems a bit too sleepy by comparison. At least to me it does.

Like I said, this is "nice" but The Average White Band makes an average White guy like me wanna jump up and dance (even though I can't dance a lick!)

    Got E?

    1. This probably would have been a BOTB shutout if I'd pitted Golub against ACB (you can't say 'white' anymore-that's a hate crime).

I picked this song for the non-jazz fans who might read and listen for the recognition factor.

Do you mean the E on the pre-gap? Did not see it until today and somehow my response from this morning did not take (was not in sent folder) so I just sent another reply a little while ago.

  3. I like this Golub take on the AWB song. I'd say I have broader tastes in jazz than you do, but the funky stuff definitely cooks. I also like the funky stuff by the Jazz Crusaders, though I guess saying "crusader" is a hate crime too these days.

  4. Not something I would listen to, but I did like the piece you posted. Great guitar.

    1. Alex-figured it would not be your style, but you may want to revisit when you're in a mellow mood...I am finding that there are some days when this lighter sound is just the ticket.
