I AIN'T AFRAID OF NO GHOST

COLDPLAY-GHOST STORIES

Okay, I know that at their most upbeat, Coldplay is not what you would call peppy, but their latest CD, Ghost Stories, might be subtitled “Music To Crash Your Car To.”

I played it on the way to work the other day and almost did just that-this disc is dark!

Presumably inspired by the dissolution of frontman Chris Martin's marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow, this is a melancholy break-up album that does have a…I’m gonna say it… haunting quality, presenting a suite of ethereal songs that seem tied together by a common theme. The lyrics are honest if not profound, and on repeated listens some of the songs are quite moving.

If Coldplay has never been your kind of music, I doubt this will win you over, but for fans, try this CD through the headphones, late at night…but not while you’re driving.

If you really have a dark side, you may want to head to Best Buy for the bonus edition with extra tracks!

  1. I think I am a dark sort of girl because I love sad songs. And I have always thought that Coldplay sang sad songs. Even their "happy" songs sound sad to me. I could listen to The Scientist on replay for a LONG time and that is not remotely happy. Sign me up for the edition with the bonus tracks...

    1. Robin-

My first listen to the album was in the car, and I did not like it much (horrible driving music).

But repeated listenings in the home setting and it's really grown on me.

I composed this post at least a week ago and I'm still playing the disc daily...and with the way I buy music, that is saying a lot.

  2. I love sad songs, but I've never been big on Coldplay. These songs have made them grow on me a bit. I might have to check the album out. Just don't tell my hipster friends. Coldplay is so mainstream, you know...

      You like Coldplay"

Another movie line that still cracks me up, but by Obama standards is now a hate crime.

  3. I like all kinds of music, but I have to be in the right mood for a sad song, much less a whole album of sad songs. Great meeting you at Robin's.
