E IS FOR EDITORS “AN END HAS A START”

I purchased the second album from Editors, "An End Has A Start,"  based on the three-song promotional sampler I was forwarded.

This record went to the top of the UK charts, where Editors have claimed the throne recently held by Coldplay. The lead track on the sampler, which is the bleak lead single from the album, is "Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors." Behind a dense wall of guitars, Tom Smith's vocals seem to be all around you, at once building and lifting into a muted grandeur.

Editors appear to be reaching for an impression of late '80s U2-sized epics, and do a better job of that than Coldplay managed on "X&Y." The rudimentary lyrics lack some of the poetic depth that the music suggests, but Editors deliver solid and moody arena-bound rock.

  1. Thanks ... I'll check it out. What's that? Uriah Heep I see off to the side? Now there's a blast from the past!

  2. Stephen-

Thanks for stopping by. A lot of those old seventies bands have continued to produce new music, but just never get the publicity (younger people tend to focus on acts closer to their age). Uriah Heep has put out a few new releases over the last decade, and they've been pretty good.

  3. The moment I saw editors, I was reminded of all the "edits" I needed to do !

Thanks for the new album related post than actual editing ;)

    Following you from A-Z challenge!

  6. I don't know them but I don't know much about music except for the contemporaries and what is on the radio.

  7. Ju and Nutschell- I was not even thinking of all the writers in this event when I picked this CD, but it's kind of fitting now that you mention it!

Jennifer and Ocean Girl-they remind me of Coldplay mixed with U2-the one song did get some airplay in AZ (which is so stuck in the past that it must have been played in your towns).

  9. Alex-

Thanks for the tip. I thought that show was a couple weeks away.

I'm not sure what "front row" means (never watch the show), but I know he was guesting in a production role.

I have been stoppy by your blog each day, but by the time I get there, there are already so many comments that there's really not much new I can say. Ditto for Arlee.

And I figure you both have enough to read this month.

And to think you were stoked when it hit 200 partcipants!
